The Vegetarian Union of Moldova (UVM) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation, active since 2003. We want a way of life without cruelty to animals to be easier to understand and to follow in Moldova, through social and educational activities.
In short
- A non-profit, non-governmental public association, active since 2003.
- Our historic name speaks of vegetarianism, but today all UVM members are vegan.
- The team is growing: many new members have joined us.
- We inform, support beginners, defend animals and care for the environment.
- You can write to us at any time at alistar@uvem.org.
Who we are
UVM was founded by committed vegetarians who want to reduce cruelty to animals and encourage a healthy way of life, in a world where all living beings can live in harmony. Today all our members are vegan, and lately many new people have joined us, with fresh energy and ideas.
You don’t have to be vegan to be welcome here. If you want to eat better during fasting, cook for a vegan friend or simply learn more, you are in the right place.
Vegetarian and vegan: what they mean
A vegetarian does not eat meat, poultry or fish. A vegan goes further: they avoid all animal-derived products, including dairy and eggs, as well as fur, wool, leather or feathers, and products tested on animals. Veganism is a natural extension of vegetarianism: a way of life without abuse and without violence towards animals.
What motivates us
People choose veganism for different reasons: personal health, compassion for animals, care for the environment, respect for peace and non-violence, concern about world hunger or religious beliefs. Not all of our members share all of these reasons. For the ethical questions, see the Frequently asked questions – ethics (in Romanian).
What we do
- We inform. On this site you will find the Vegan guide to Moldova, recipes (including fasting recipes), material on nutrition and simple steps for those who want to go vegan.
- We support beginners. We aim to gather, gradually and verified, useful information about vegan products and places in Moldova and about a balanced diet.
- We defend animals. We promote a civilised attitude towards animals and oppose experiments on animals.
- We care for the environment. We support plant-based agriculture and ecological transport.
- We meet. We organise meetings open to the public.
