Whatever we think about more controversial aspects of animal rights, such as medical experiments, our society generally agrees that it is ethically wrong to set a cat on fire for amusement. Yet when we choose to eat meat even though we do not need it to survive, we also choose to cause others suffering and death simply for the pleasure of meat’s taste. Considering what happens on farms and in slaughterhouses, setting a cat on fire is, by comparison, relatively humane. In both cases, all we receive in return is a few moments of trivial pleasure.
