Yes, it is. Taking the United States as an example, preparing turkey is a traditional part of celebrating Thanksgiving, and many American cultural heroes were hunters. Other cultures have similar examples.
However, not all parts of our cultural heritage are something to be proud of. Again taking the United States as an example, George Washington and many of the Founding Fathers enslaved people. The slave trade, mistreatment of Indigenous peoples, internment camps for Japanese Americans during the Second World War, and McCarthyism during the Cold War are all parts of American cultural heritage.
In my view, one strength of American culture is that we readily acknowledge the mistakes we made in the past. In our schools, we teach children about the darkest periods in our history without hesitation or justification.
When future generations look back on our time, the fact that we once ate meat will be one aspect of our cultural heritage of which we cannot be proud. In particular, the way the United States currently raises animals for food will be seen as a dark chapter not only in American history but in the history of the whole world.
